It might not seem right, or easy, to forgive somebody who mistreated you. But the act of forgiving is not for them, it’s for you. It’s allowing you to move on with your life.
When you hold onto negative feelings towards other people, they live within you. You have to bear that pain everytime you think of that person or situation. You are only hurting yourself.
But when you forgive, you release that negativity. You are acknowledging that life isn’t fair and people aren’t perfect. A tough, but necessary pill for some to have to swallow.
This doesn’t mean you need to be happy with that person, or be okay with the way they treated you. Forgiving is not an endorsement. It just means that you can move on from the past.
Think about a person in particular that you are holding a grudge against – How do you benefit from feeling this way?
Try forgiving somebody to make peace for yourself.
