Imagine for a moment that you are off on a nice vacation.
Maybe you are spending some time away at a rustic cabin. You are enjoying your time away, finally able to relax and let down your guard. Spending time outdoors hiking, swimming, and ending your nights aside a nice warm fire.
But what you don’t know is that back at home, somebody is breaking into your house. Going room to room. stealing valuable items inside. Jewelry, financial documents, and expensive tech products.
Your possessions worth tens of thousands of dollars are being hauled out of your life. All without your knowledge or permission.
When you return home at the end of your vacation, you walk into your house, quickly realizing what had happened. The classic signs of a break-in and your valuable items missing.
How do you feel? Violated? Angry? Sad?
You are right to feel that way. Nothing feels worse than having been taken advantage of by others, and losing something(s) precious to you.
The Real Robbery
While the story of your house being robbed sounds scary, the reality is that you are being robbed of something more precious every day – your time.
Every single day. The media and news you expose yourself to. The social media feeds you scroll through. The bad relationships you put up with. The mindset that you accept to live with.
These are all stealing something more important than simple possessions, they take your time and attention.
The difference between a robbery of our time versus the robbery of our home, is that we’ve learned to accept our time being stolen from us.
We don’t feel violated when we spend anxious hours watching the latest news or political scandals. We don’t feel violated scrolling through Instagram or Reddit.
But we probably should.
