You’ve seen it before with an “Offer Ending Soon!” or “While Supplies Last!” style of promotion. Marketing that is designed to create a sense of urgency or scarcity in your mind.
Clothing companies and retail stores are notorious for using this type of marketing. You get an email, see a sponsored social media post, or get an old-fashioned direct mail advertisement for a special sale offering a discount that lasts only a few days.
Our brains are wired for loss aversion, so we don’t want to lose out on the ability to take advantage of a great deal, or miss out on the ability to buy a certain product.
It’s the most basic marketing tactic to get our animal brains to buy something we don’t need.
3 Reasons To Not Buy Now
But despite what your panicking brain may try to convince you of, it’s okay to let a “good deal” expire. In fact, I’d encourage you to actively be on the lookout for fake urgency and scarcity affecting your purchasing decisions.
There are good reasons to NOT buy now:
- Time To Reconsider – It’s very possible, in some cases likely, that if you wait on a purchase, you might not make it at all. With further consideration, you realize you don’t need to buy that item.
- Sales Come Often – Discount promotions come fast and often in the world of retail. If you found a deal on an item at one point, you’ll be able to find it again.
- Other Options Available – By not rushing into a purchase, you’ll have more time to look at other options. After researching, you may find there is a better product available.
